![]() ![]() The bottom line is simple: People don't want other people watching what they're doing online, even if they're not doing anything wrong.Ī VPN (virtual private network) is an internet security subscription that basically allows you to make up your own internet rules. We know you've probably seen absolutely loads of VPN reviews from experts across the board, but if you wanted a raw opinion - or thousands of them - from people with absolutely no filter, there's only one place to go: Reddit. Would you be chill if someone leaked your entire search history to the government? How about if your internet provider made it so that one episode of The Office took an hour to load? If you've had a crisis about anything like this, you've probably considered investing in a VPN. With that said this was 2014 thru 2019, which feels like an eternity now. This content originally appeared on Mashable for a US audience and has been adapted for the UK audience. Comparatively, Express worked really well for this, but if you're willing to spend some time configuring iOS, once you get it setup, it's really reliable. I suspect a lot of users who complain may be iOS users because the 1 click connect features don't work well in China. I've had to download OpenVPN profiles etc to get it to work reliably in China, but on Android, Mac, Windows there tended to be a lot less configuration needed given the OSes are a bit more open for tweaking. Based on my comparisons at least there seemed no reason to switch.Īs someone who also used multiple platforms (iOS, Android, MacOS, Windows), I noticed that iOS was the most difficult to setup with PIA. PIA was only 1/3rd the cost only, so after a year I tossed Express. I noticed that whenever I had issues on Express, I also had issues on PIA and vice versa. After one of the major 2018 crackdowns from the GFW I bought both ExpressVPN and PIA, with the former being one of the premier solutions in China. ![]() On my first trip I tried PIA first just to gauge how it worked and it worked fine. ![]() Prior to embarking on these work trips, people would tell me to get Express or Astrill. I have suggested this feature, but I guess most of PIA's customers aren't interested.įwiw, I'm concerned about VPN services that are "tolerated" (in that they advertise functional VPN services for China) in China, because it wouldn't be unexpected for them to have surrendered encryption keys to the Chinese government in order to gain that tolerance.Īs someone who traveled to China a lot for work prior to the pandemic, it's worked fine for me. ![]() I've got no issues with PIA's service - it works not only as advertised but beyond what's advertised - but I have no interest in their various desktop clients which do not have the ability to try random PIA endpoints until they discover one that actually functions. I ended up writing my own Linux shell scripts because I needed a way to keep retrying random PIA servers until one actually worked. The desktop clients can connect to some servers (the list changes at random), and you'll have to change server every 2-15 days because the Great Firewall eventually notices something suspicious going on. I have been using PIA in China mainland for 6 years, and I'm sending this response via PIA because reddit is blocked here. ![]()
